OSIS (Open Source Identity System) brings together many identity-related open-source projects, and synchronizes and harmonizes the construction of an interoperable identity layer for the internet from open-source parts. Its first deliverable is interoperability with Microsoft CardSpace, although OSIS also encompasses alternate technologies such as OpenID and SAML.

Identity Commons seeks to function as an "upside down umbrella" organization helping to facilitate and coordinate the work of distributed, self-organizing working groups who share the common purpose of creating an interoperable, universally-adopted user-centric identity layer for the Internet.
